Events: August 2018 (Revised 8/3/18)

Wednesday, August 8:  The noon movie at LVAL is the drama/musical  “The Greatest Showman,” starring Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum, who rose from a clerk in a shipping company to the creator of the Barnum and Bailey Circus.  Along the way he meets Queen Victoria and Swedish opera star Jenny Lind.  His ambition to climb the social ladder strains many relationships, including family, friends and members of his troupe.  A disastrous fire leads him to re-evaluate his life and rebuild the circus.  The story is told through song and dance.  Rated PG;

1 hour, 45 minutes.  Members $2.00, non-members $4.00.  An ice cream sundae is included.

Wednesday, August 15:  Fun and Games session, 2-3:30 p.m. at LVAL room 107.  Come and play some games.  Bring what you have and we’ll decide what to play: Telestration, Five Crowns, Dominoes, Chinese Checkers, etc.  It’s not about winning; it’s about having fun.  Optional: lunch at 12:30 p.m. at Ringer’s Roost, 1801 Liberty Street, Allentown.  RSVP to Dori by Wednesday regarding both lunch and games.  Note:  Not our usual day of the week due to room availability issues.

Saturday, August 18: Spend an afternoon on the beach at Tuscarora State Park, just outside of Tamaqua.  Walk down a steep, wooded path to a grassy area partly in the shade, cross a stretch of beach and into lovely, clear water with fine sand underneath.  The park is a 5-minute drive from the crossroads of Routes 309 and 209 in downtown Tamaqua, approximately 60 minutes from Allentown.  There is no admission fee and the snack bar is expected to be open.  ETA at the beach is noon.  Directions and maps will be available at the August 10 meeting at LVAL or by email.    Note:  No lifeguard.  Swim at your own risk.  Pickup locations for car-pooling will be determined once reservations have been received.  RSVP to Dori by Wednesday, August 15.  On the way home, we will be stopping at Leiby’s Restaurant in Tamaqua for a meal and/or some of their famous ice cream.  Wednesday, August 22:  The second noon movie at LVAL this month is “Molly’s Game,” a drama starring Jessica Chastain and Kevin Costner.  When a catastrophic injury robbed skier Molly Bloom of the chance for an Olympic medal, she turned to running a high-stakes poker game.  Her business lasted for ten years before being targeted and raided by 17 armed FBI agents.  Rated R; 2 hours, 20 minutes.  Members $2.00, non-members $4.00.  An ice cream sundae is included.
